VERDICT

Affordable but with all the modern features you need.

This convertible-hybrid laptop has a 14” touch screen display that’s complemented by the new innovations by Windows 10. A busybody that’s always on the go will appreciate the ability to check their emails and manage their files without having to find a stable flat surface like a table. Great for leisure, the HDMI output supports up to 4K Ultra HD of media. The large screen will show only the clearest pictures when you watch your favorite movies and television shows.

Pros

  • Sleek and modern

The 13.3” x 9.3” x 0.85” dimensions of the E45W-C4200X looks great in the mixture of brushed black and the metallic overall coating. The blending of the track pad and the keyboard is well done since neither stood out even though they covered a lot more space compared to the usual layout of a laptop.

  • Easy-to-use convertible

The hinges of the screen are durable and the positions of the sockets on the side have just enough space to not feel too far apart. Since it is a 2-in-1 laptop, the E45W-C4200X’s reversible display lets you use it like a tablet whenever you’re on the go. Of course it’s a lot bigger than most tablets, but you won’t feel like you’re carrying a monitor.

  • Fast processor

With the faculty of the 2.1 GHz Intel Core i3-5015U processor and Intel HD Graphics 5500, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 has a lot more power over a majority of laptops in the market. While the setup won’t be running triple A game titles like Grand Theft Auto V at ultra-quality graphics settings, it will smoothly run popular games such as League of Legends, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

  • Low power draw

The heat management of the E45W-C4200X allows it to maintain room temperature without interfering with the acoustics. Generating no more than 34.4 decibels of noise, the system fan doesn’t generate enough sounds to attract unnecessary attention to itself when left idle.

Cons

  • Low-res and reflective screen

Having one of the most reflective surfaces, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 suffers greatly with its maximum brightness of 175 lux for the backlight barely being enough to make it suitable for use under the glaring sun.

  • Short battery life

Don’t expect the E45W-C4200X to outlast a long flight in terms of battery life. You’re more likely to spend more time charging it every few stops if you’re always on the go while using the laptop. Though for the price it’s asking for, this ordeal is reasonable.

  • Comes with bloatware

People don’t necessarily dislike Windows 10 as an OS, but the bloatware that comes with it drives heavy tweakers like me crazy. You can expect the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 to be filled with a lot of software you may never touch, but impossible to uninstall in one sitting. Annoying your customers isn’t particularly good business, but you get what you pay for on this one.

Comparison

Compared to the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 Series, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 has 4 more gigabytes of RAM and a wider working area in terms of screen size. It should be noted that the E45W-C4200X is heavier by a little over a pound and has a shorter battery lifespan.

The pricier Lenovo Yoga 3 14 has more RAM over the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14, but its storage capacity is significantly lower only being 256 GB. A massive downgrade compared to the E45W-C4200X’s 500 GB cap. With such an affordable asking price, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 certainly offers more flexibility when the user wants to upgrade their laptop.

Verdict

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 E45W-C4200X is great if you’ve just started out with convertible-hybrid laptops. It comes with Windows 10 which is designed specifically for its kind. The affordable asking price that matches other desktop-replacement laptops is already a good deal if you’re in need of a mobile computer that can be a substitute for a tablet as well.

Keep in mind that you’ll be greeted with bloatware that affects the already short lifespan, but those are things that can be addressed with a few hours spent uninstalling unnecessary programs. This laptop is the perfect companion for a travelling workhorse that needs constant access to their digital files.
